Thanks to the great recommendations of folks here ... I bought the Viewsonic PJ358 projector. I now have it installed in a "testing mode".... and it has already made all the difference in the world! I'm one happy camper .

Turning to final into KBOS:

Fantastic view John!

Do those projectors only enlarge the forward view, or do you get a wrap-around effect out the side windows too?

Awesome pic John! Show us more!!

I can't decide which to go with, a projector or 24" lcd display.

Tim,

Thanks.

From my experience so far........ go for the projector. I can in NO WAY see that a 24" wide image ,no matter how high rez detailed and clear it is, can have the FLIGHT FEELING of the BIG projector display. Yesterday I had one very brief moment where I got the "dizzys" when my mind was expecting one thing, steady forward progress on short final, and some turbulence hit me suddenly sideways. AMAZING!

In MY pit the only other option would have been a 60" plasma HD TV. BIG $$$$ And yes, if I could have afforded that, that would have proved better overall due to BOTH size and resolution.

But the projector at 1024 x 768 is just FINE. :D

BSW,

Thanks.

Remembering the whole discussion of "realism" and "tradeoffs"...... my pit is built around a lot of compromises. One of them is that I have EXACLTY a 60" x 60" by ceiling height footprint to work with. It is all the space in the house that I could justify devoting to such a "toy". So everything (except the computers driving it) is inside that "box".

Because of that, I will have only front windscreen view on the single projector, and the pit only models the captain's side. I HOPE to install a left side "window" that will be a flat screen LCD monitor built to look like the side window. That will come much later. Even later than THAT... I might install a matching "window" on the right side...... but possibly not.

"Generic" has it's advantages. ;) I'm going for the "essence" of commercial airplane.

.............john

Hi,are you using this projector as front or rear projection?

imported,

I am using the projector in front projection mode. It is currently mounted upside down so it is set "inverted". Next step is a front projection single bounce mirror setup to lenghten the overall throw distance by about 3 feet.

This projector has AWESOME short throw capabilities when compared to most currently produced projectors..... or at least ones that are not the $2500 + "short throw" special projectors list.

At 48" single throw lens to screen, I am getting a 38" wide image.
