View Full Version : Screwdriver+Beer+Real AC gauges=This!

My workbench looks like a graveyard for AC gauges! I took a synchro transmitter coupled to a cheap small servo which turns it using SIOC. Add one of my 115Vac 400Hz power supplies, stir in a 28V transformer, 5- wires and a real oil pressure gauge and PRESTO!

A working gauge which operates smoothly, consistently, and realistic! If i can do this, anyone can!!!!! :)

Hey that's excellent! Mike Powell would be proud of that effor.

But where's the beer? ;)

Would you be able to give more information on how you did this perhaps a tutorial or any sites in relation you could recommend on the topic.

thanks very much

Nice Servo, what plane did that come out of :) :) :) Nice work Rob.

I would appreciate some sort of walkthrough too.
I have some spitfire Gauges, which, unless I figure out how.. Will not link up to MFS'04 I wondered if you could show me how? That would make such an awesome addition to my sim.

That looks like a micro helicopter servo....

I normally don't put a plug in for a Vendor, but Mike Powell has been such a tremendous help to our community. He's a man with a world of information.

And then... his first book... "Building Simulated Aircraft Instrumentation" Absolutely FANTASTIC!!!

Check it out.... http://mikesflightdeck.com/mfdbooks.htm

Matt, you are correct! Mike Powell and David Allen helped me on this little project. I'll still be glad to help anyway i can. ;)

The servo is a Hitec HS55 and that whole assembly will fit inside a 2"diameter gauge!! :)

Back to hanging my overhead :)

Good job on the project. It looks really good.

I can show you an easy way to make the Duct Temp gauge in your O/H work if you are interested? 5Vdc, couple of resistors and wala! :)

Sure! But I'd have to find the gauge first. Mine is just a dummy made from the Boeing light plate and a 35mm camera skylight filter.

PM or post it here for everyone.

Can this be done with the engine gauges as well?

I got 3 of them! :) I'll sell you one wired and ready to go for 35.00+shp.

Rob

Would be interested to know how to do for the Overhead APU gauge.(EGT)
I do not use PMSystem so I'd like the gauge needle to turn slowly about 300° clockwise when I switch the APU start toggle and revert to 0 when switched off

Doable?

FSX or FS9?

You're on! I'll send a Paypal if you accept that next Friday. Is this USB? I don't currently have any sort of a card except a Hagstrom.

How does this communicate with FS9?

Thanks!!!

Send me your e-mail address in a PM for the Paypal!

Fs9.........

Fs9.........

With FS9, you are going to need a servo IOCard from opencockpits, a servo, and a couple of electronics parts. Doable for around 100.00

I'm afraid I'm going to hold off for now. I didn't think it would be that easy or cheap.

I'm keeping this topic in mind for down the road.

Why a servo card? just want to drive the gauge from a switch?

What do you think?

Don't you need a 400Hz power supply to drive the synchros?

I experimented with this technique too but I had only a few instruments that were working with synchros, so I decided to replace them with Simkits.

Of course it looks more authentic with real instruments but it will be more expensive. Servos, synchros, power supply....

NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Servo = 8.99

Synchro transmitter = 9.99 - 15.00

Inverter = 30.00 + shp

Using real gauges versus toy simkits, PRICELESS!!!!!! :)

From where do you get the inverter an the synchros? I got my synchros from disassembled instruments...
And my power supply was a one chip sinus oscillator hooked to an audio amplifier that was adjusted to spit out the 28VAC.

Do you have a link to a supplier?

Look in the classifieds section, i have an Inverter for sale.

Ebay has the synchros.

By the time i pay shipping, simkits darn near 200.00 per gauge! I have found a way to drive the real instruments 3 different ways fairly cheaply so will not waste the money on simkits stuff. Just my 02cents. :)

If you buy them as a kit, they are only half the price...
