But how many people just have that money spare to buy a cockpit on the off chance? unless they grab a payday advance or quick loan depending how much you want it, id say it would go for £600 tops......!

sometimes (very often) a real shell costs more in time, money, work than building your own from scratch. Of course it has often an irrestible appeal.
Transport/ cleaning/ taking apart most things to re-engineer them/ erasing 20-30 + years of abuse takes a big toll...
My experience is that building a sim and then a shell around it is faster/easier/cheaper than building a sim within the constrain of a old crappy shell.
All depends on your priorities.
