Okay guys and gals (fellow flightsimmers everywhere). What's on your letter to Santa this year?

1. Saitek Pro Flight Headset.
http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/pfhead.htm

I've kind of hum'd and haw'd at the idea of getting a 'real' headset. With the expense and some what difficulty in getting one on my mind and the comparative easy of use of the Saitek version. I'm leaning in that direction. I'm hoping to do a few mods to it just the same.

- Paint it a decent color.
- Replace the air cups with gelled versions (if possible).

That's pretty much it. I've bought everything else I need so far. I'd love a new simkits Cessna yoke wheel too but I can't have everything hehe...

I guess mine would have to be to get a job. I am 59 years old and laid off for over 6 months now......you think the young guys are having trouble getting a job. Pretty soon the unemployment will be gone and then what? So, I want a job for Christmas.

Sorry to hear that, Milt. I hope you find something soon.

Hi Milt...

.....Never give up, I was unemployed for a long time through no fault of my own and through determination and the will not to give up....something good came up which I could build on.....

Hard times I know (Not just for usa, but for all of us!)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for what I want for xmas.....my student loan and girlfriends creditcards paid off! :)

Overhead and throttle is my biggest wants, but realistically i'll probably just get the overhead soon.

A skilled woodworker to sneak round my house and sort out my homemade shell!
The missus thinks i have built a garden shed inside the house

A visitor who understands Windows 7 and can get my WOAI packages installed and probably many more add ons to follow that will give me trouble. Do I hate computers!

I think, at that price, you could really buy a real headset :) for real planes.
In my wishlist at the moment, I put "time to do things :D " at first place :)

Your right but then I need to increase the impediance on the mic via interface and then perhaps get an intercom for the unit. I could do that at the same time but that would be added cost. In my price range it's a about $140 for headset and $99 for the intercom for a total of $240.00. This would save me about $100 and I can figure a way around the intercom situation (with a small handheld mixer) which essentially is what the intercom is.

Personally I'd love to get the real deal too as I do have hopes of getting a PPL someday. For now though this will have to do.. if Santa got my mail? Hehe.

Hello Ron

I think that the saitek headgear is great for the sim as it does exactly what you want it to do within reason.

Its a great way to get used to the idea and feel of heavy headgear and perfect for training on your sim in time for PPL training.

When you get used to these and have the resources to train for your PPL then I would get some decent avi grade headphone such as David Clarke head gear or if you can afford it buy some Bose headgear!

But the Saitek headgear looks good to me!

Go for it!

Hmmm as a realworld also pilot (general aviation) I wouldn't buy those headsets in the very first phase of training. Better go for some http://www.flightcom.net/headsets/4dlx-headset.php for instance (which are really quiet in flight).

Are you sure that with these you'd have impedence problems? (trying to find the exact specs on websites)....

Try installing AND running them by right clicking, select properties, then compatibility tab, and select the compability mode that the program was designed for (like XP or Windows 98 ). In addition, also select "Run as Administrator".

By doing this I was able to get a lot of programs to work.

Thanks Grant. The guys over at WOAI forums have now got me up and running. What a frustrating day I've had but what a great community flightsimmers are. Happy Christmas to all.

That's from what I've read anyway. I'm not sure from a specific avi headgear standpoint. They are designed to run from between 12v and 40v. So my thinking is that the mic is quiet sensitive to your voice when in a plane but at your computer you would need to turn the input volume down to reduce the sensitivity hence the impedance problem. The input volume is so low that the clarity goes away. Much like turning your speakers up but turning your output volume from your computer down. You can still hear them but at a reduced level of clarity.

You can run the input side through an amp (intercom) and solve that problem as then it's reduced electronically while still maintaining clarity. In audio terms that would be like a pre-amp as both headsets (intercom) would need to hear each other prior to being fed into the aircrafts comm radio.

I'm not sure if that is a problem with all avi headsets or just a few? I was hoping to find perhaps someone here that has an avi headset that he/she uses for both simming and real world flight?

Aircraft Spruce has a nice set that are really quite reasonable. Accept for the above mentioned difficulty if it does exist? I would then need an intercom to solve that adding to the cost. Hence the Humming and Hawing a the start of my post.. hehe
