Hello,

Just a few pictures of my latest work with the CNC. I'm working on my MIP panels and made the Main Panel DU with backlighting. I'll show you a picture of the backlighting in daylight and one during the night.

The third picture is a flapgauge based on my first one, but now with 2 needles. This one is not for me but for another 737 builder. So I have to make another one for myself also.

Enjoy, Wendy

Great stuff Wendy, I've just completed two sets of MIP sub panels and I've just got a few more of the clear backplates to make. I'm making one MIP for a customer and another to upgrade my own sim which I finally got working last Friday after being in storage since April. I am working the CNC machine every chance I get. Heere is the result of some messing about when I should have been working! I'm going to build a miniture cockpit out of 1.5mm clear acrylic!

Man i need a machine like that!! just imagine what things you could make with it.
That flap gauge is great looks like it exactly like a real one
And love the mini cockpit idea

That looks great! want to tell us about your back-lighting technique?

Well the backlighting is done with very tiny SMD leds which I mounted on a printed circuitboard. I think the picture says it all.

Hi Wendy No:-1 lurker and dreamer here LOL:-) trouble with DIY CNC machines is that having got them up and running you then see how you could do things differently and spend more time tweaking and upgrading rather than making :-) the beauty of the kit / ready made stuff is you dont tamper you just get on with it and the work you guys are doing proves it , Just to say again great work and a question regarding the Surface mount LED's . i cant make out any current limiting resistors ? did you just limit the PSU current or are they not needed for this type of use? just a general info type question as I'm learning stuff all the time, Cheers

Hey Wannabeaflyer,

Buying a CNC is the easy part, start producing things is another one. Before I could make some nice things, I've milled a lot of material to scrap ;-) . Still made a few changes to the Z-axis that contributed to my current results.

Your question, the power that goes through the LEDS is limited by a resistor. You can't see him here because he is outside the PCB. You always need a limiting resistor with Leds.

Hope to post some CAD drawings i have done for my MK2 version soon just for information , like i said My Problem is i luv to tinker - tweek and genrally Redo, that formula usually equates to = Job never finished but for me thats half the fun LOL:-) Motion Platform Check , Cnc Check Motion Race Seat Check . Time to Build er Suat LOL:-)

hi,
some weeks ago i asked wendy if she would make me one of these beautiful flap gauges. she did a really great job and today i mounted the completed gauge on the mip. i took a quick video (6 mb with poor quality) and a picture.
all i can say, i am really impressed by her work! so again: thanks a lot!
regards, christian

Hi Wendy,

Are these normal SMD led's?
Have you also details, manufacturer, partnumber etc?

Best regards

Jan Geurtsen

Hello Jan,

These are normal amber SMD leds type 1206 and 120 mcd. They come from Farnel and the typenumber is DIALIGHT 5988240107F.

You can find this type of SMD led all over the internet.

Hei Wendy,
what kind of cnc bit do you use for engraving (labeling) the panels ?

Cheers
Andy...

My machine is a Colinbus (Profiler). When I did the panels in this thread I did not have an engraving nose, so they are manually engraved letter per letter. Took a lot of time, but the result was very pleasing.

So you're making your own CNC machine? Are you making the plans publicly available? Selling them? What is the workable area? How much will it cost to build? What materials are using for it?

Did you do a CNC template of the lettering and then simply go over the template with some form of chisel?

The lettering is engraved directly into the paint.

Hi i Have made some plans for the 3rd version of my CNC and at the moment ( or should that be when the weather allows me to get back to the workshop ) will be using my working but not so pretty looking current cnc router to make the bits for the new all version will post the PDF's for people to look at but some elements will get tweeked before the final plans are released for free ..
