View Full Version : Where to you "hide" your keyboard and mouse ?

The ultimate simming experience of course is without the need of a keyboard or mouse, but I will not personaly avoid those two for a long time.
What keyboard and mouse do you use ?
Where do you hide them to "make it us real as it gets" ?

My keyboard sits under the mip on the FO side, i just used drawer runners and a piece of wood cut to size and the keyboard slides away underneath and can be slid out when needed, i did have a small usb keyboard in the overhead before i got the proper one and that worked well too, in fact i liked the keyboard above my head.

I have my mouse on top of the glareshield where both pilots can access it and the backlit keyboard is fitted to the overhead!

Great idea Gwyn ;)
Unfortunately I do not have an overhead yet :-P I was thinking something similar but for the pedestal. A tiny keyboard instead of one of the panels

I've seen twice the most elegant solution i.m.o.
These builders made in their pedestal a "second (pseudo) audioselector-panel" (comm-box).
As we all know this second A.S. panel is not needed, there is no support for it.
So a variety of knobs, buttons can get an alternative legenda nearby them and can be used for the most common simulator specific functions.
"PAUSE" is the most popular, when there is a "ground call" for diner ....:-)

The keyboard has no been decided upon yet - but instead of a mouse I bought a touchpad from ErgoTouchpad.com and will put it in the pedestalbay. The mouse needs some place for motion - a trackball or a touchpad does not. I chose a touchpad as it is easier to conceal as a panel part than a trackball.

In order to manage 3 computers using one touchpad and one keyboard I've setup synergy+ to control it. So far I have had no problems using XP pro and Vista.

By the time my GA build is done, there will only be a few keys needed regularly for flights. Among these are AI ATC commands, pause, esc, and a few others. I plan on hiding keys for those in round momentary switches that look like the fuses in the electrical panel.

The reason for me to have a keyboard/mouse setup is mainly because I almost always fly online on VATSIM. So I need to be able to communicate via the keyboard from time to time. I also intend to download charts etc to the lower Eicas screen so I can minimize the printing of charts. It is nice to use a mouse (or in my case - a touchpad) for this.

I have one of those (Rii Mini) and they are great! It is backlit and looks very cool in the dark. I plan to use it to control all my displays utilizing a 4 port KVM switch.

I was ready to purchase one of these a week ago, but it does not have scroll function. Mouse wheel is needed to zoom in and out in FSnav map. Other than that its perfect.
Maybe in the near future....
BTW is there a way to create a keyboard out of a dummy CDU ?

Just tried this:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-mouse-pro-remote-trackpad/id289616509?mt=8
Works very well, and has a keyboard and trackpad built in!
I am an iphone Junkie, so I always have it within arms reach. My goal is still to get the hardware to the point I don't need it though.

Hi,
I purchased this for a keyboard Speedlink SL-4439 (http://www.wikio.co.uk/guide/speed-link-sl-4439-sbk-playstation-3-211249.html) for 25 euro. It is wireless and I am happy with it, given the cost and it does match with my CH yoke, at least until I decide what to do with 737 yokes. It switches off after few minutes of not usage to save battery life. By pressing any button it gets activated again. No drivers needed for windows, just PnP.

...
I also purchased the XL Ergonomic Touchpad (http://www.ergonomictouchpad.com/) from UK. Costed around 50 euro. It's expensive, but it's worth the money in my opinion. True PnP, and because of its style you have to watch very close to understand that this is a pad instead of a Boeing pedestal accessory !!!

Nick,
the keyboard is a "Chat-Board" and has no Function keys. What is the specific usage within FS then?

JWSI use it only when choosing an airport through FS, and also when writing in unicom 122.80 during online flying. Other than that, I really do not need any keybord...
A usual keyboard is hidden behind the DST for any installation or windows needs, but that's a rare occasion...
Cheaper supplier here, Service great, very pleased with it.

I got excited by the pricing but that puts a whole new light or rather shadow on that idea. Seems like paying a bit more is a much better choice then loosing your money altogether.
Guys,
If you look at average rating, 4 out of 5 stars isnt to bad. My service was equal to any of the Chinese sellers ive used over the years. yet to be dissapointed. So i will take my chances. By the way very pleased with it and remember user reviews arnt always what they appear on the surface.
Just look at what some of our members have expected.

This is for you UK guys, i bought a mini keyboard at Maplins, they have a few available, running on different connections, mine is bluetooth. It measures 202 x 100 x 18mm and includes a small mouse tracker joystick, very useful, and will hide away very easily. It was about £30, but there were cheaper there aswell. Just my reccomendation there, and im sure everyone else has an equivelant in thier local electronic store ;)
Cheerts,
Jordan
