Hi everyone. This is the continuation of this thread http://www.mycockpit.org/forums/showthread.php/22770-727-MIP-dimensions
Here's an update of todays progress.
I found that 2" drain pipes would work for engine instrument bezels. :)

Lookin' great!!! So excited to see a 727 coming together (especially one from scratch). I never heard back if you were still wanting help with locating or obtaining pieces either, so if you sent that message, it was lost.
Do you need the actual glareshield itself or is it just not set up yet? There are a couple dirt cheap ones on E-Bay that don't have the fire pulls (which you already have).

Hi Jon.
I never heard back from you. I guess your message got lost. I did get a glare shield off of e-bay. It will be sent by sea together with a few other items, so I won't see that for a while unfortunately. I have plenty work to do with the stuff that have arrived though. I really can't proceed with the windows and the rest of the shell construction before I get the glare shield though.
I can't believe I mispelled the title! I must have bee exhausted from putting up that OH panel last night! :D

I dropped you a PM...lemme know if you didn't get it. Everything is lookin' good....may have to make a trip out to Norway and Denmark to see some of these pieces coming together!!!

Just noticed something....are you missing the light caps for the instrument comparators??? I think they go to either side of the fire pulls, but I'm not building a Boeing cockpit so I'm not sure. I happen to have just the light caps if you need them.
It looks absolutely wonderful.

Yes, I do miss all the caps on the glare panel. I didn't know they were instrument comparator caps though. I know the other ones I miss is the Wheel weel fire cap, and bottle discharged caps. Maybe I'll get them from you along with that tiller wheel! :)
Thanks for the nice comment!

I've been busy wiring up and interfacing the OH panel lately. Still waiting for my 5v power supply for the backlighting.
Most of the switches are hooked up now.

Can anybody tell me how to loose the guage night lighting? This is what happens to the non DF guages at night.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/Paganize/CIMG0031.jpg
If I turn the off the fluorescent panel light on the OH panel they all reappear though

Hi
I just came across this thread.
First congratulations on your work and for choosing the Boeing 727 for your sim. Welcome to a very exclusive 727 sim builders club!!!
Second I apologize for not recieve your private message. Last year I had many problems with my server and with virus issues.
Its been many years since I builts my panel and since I played arround with FSPANEL STUDIO but I think your problem with the gauges is because you may have to assing a "Night Lighting Color Hue Effect" to them. FSPANEL ST will let you assign a night lighting color ( yellowish, redish, greenish etc.) effect to your gauges so you can see them at night. If this is not done then at night the gauges will be pitch black.
If this works for you then make sure to assign the same night lighting effect (color) to the gauges you CAN ALREADY SEE at night with the fluore light on. You do not want some of your guages to look redish and others yellowish at night. They should all look incandescent yellowish at night.
Are you using the Richard Probust gauges?
I hope this works for You and look foward to seeing Your Boeing 727 in the Sky Very Soon!!!

Hi Joe.
I've visited your site more than once to be honest, I got a few ideas for my MIP there as well! :)
My guages are a mix of DF 727, Aerosim 727, and Richard Probst guages. The guages you can see at night are the DF 727 guages.
I'll have to play around with FSPanel studio again, and see if I can get the other guages to light up.
Thanks for your input Joe! I'm happy to see that you are still active with your amazing 727 sim.
Anderson/SBSP, thanks for your nice comment! :)

Hi Tor
What projector are you using there?
Is it a shortthrow one?
All the best

Hi Geremy.
Yes it's a Benq MW811ST. Wish I could afford 3 of them!

OMG! Those BenQ projectors are over £1000 each in the UK!

Well, it wasn't that expensive over here, but it did take a chunk out of my pay check. Then again what doesn't in this hobby!?
I spent a lot of time reading specs on various projectors before I decided which one to get. It became obvious very soon that buying a second hand cheap low res projector (which I had initially thought of doing) just wasn't going to cut it. So I decided to get one I can enjoy for many years.

Thanks lenne. :)
I got my long awaited 5v power supply. Unfortunately it wasn't juicy enough to light up all the panels of my OH panel. It could only handle 6 panels at a time. I just got a 20A one off ebay now. Hopefully the one I allready got will handle the radio stack!
Got another rather big package on it's way from the states! Will be a few weeks before I see that one:(
Patience never was a strength of mine! :)

A small update.
I've fabricated the angeled panels below the MIP and fitted and interfaced encoders for various bugs etc. The two open holes are for toggle switches for switching between adf/vor 1 & 2 on the RMI.

You may wanna check out this guys stuff. He's got a TON of stuff on the 727. Instrument panel with all gauges (as flown), all pieces for a flight engineer station, a complete overhead (I think you have it), and a bunch of other pieces. Additionally he has a throttle quadrant for a C-130...kinda unusual.
This is a guy I've dealt with very extensively and he is very reasonable. If he's not willing to ship, I can give you some alternate shipping options via PM.

Thanks Jon.
I saw his adds last night. He definately has a lot of goodies! I actually thought of bidding on his cockpit lights & speaker package. The FE station doesn't look complete to me? I allready have a full OH panel and a rather big package is coming in from the states! :) ETA mid /end March. Can't wait!

The actual framework isn't present, but I think most of the other stuff is there. The framework will be hard to find outside of the one available from APHS LTD, as it is actually part of the airframe, and is VERY difficult to get. The only other one I've seen in my 3 years of watching was cut in several places and would require a LOT of work. However, you could possibly make something very similar with some DZUS rails and measurements, as well as a bit of metal work.
Jon
-Edit: Spoke too soon. I looked through and there are some missing components, although thats still quite a few pieces for a FE panel for a reasonable price. I'm trying to find out exactly what is missing. Jon

My 24V power supply is here. Hooked up the lights under the glare panel, and the pedestal lights in the OH panel tonight. All lights are controlled directly by the respective switches on the OH panel

More lights.

The anti ice panel lights have got me thinking though! It's going to take some wiring to make those light up realisticly.
Oh well, I'll leave that for an other day.

Here is my SIOC code for the lights (Window heat and wing deice).
Might be a starting point...I hope it is complete since I copied it from different parts of my code. The code actually does not do anything except for controling the lights. The VJs (virtual joysticks) are thought to be used to switch on the switches in the sim, but I am not sure if that is really a good idea since they are (in my FlightOne 727) toggle switches and the software cannot determine the state of the switch so you might just turn it the wrong way in the sim).
Good luck,
Florian

WOW! You're light years ahead of me. I haven't gotten to the point where output cards control lights and what not. I haven't even got an output card yet. My window heat lights work like this: switch ON -> green light ON. Very simple ;) The over heat lights are not hooked up. I don't know but I dont think the over heat lights are modeled in the DF727? will they ever light up, unless you press the test button?
Thanks and best regards

I have no idea when they will light up - probably you would have to program something like that (e.g. light up after a certain time if outside temp is above a given value and heat is on for that long).
I spent some time in writing the SIOC code. On the other hand, you have already overtaken me in such a shourt time as far as the hardware is concerned, I'm indeed impressed.
If you need some more codes, please let me know.

John from Ruscool in New Zealand has been kind enough to design and build me a retro radio stack. He's been hard at work for a few weeks, here's a few pictures of the prototypes. Btw. he might offer these as a new product on his website in the future for anyone interested.

yeah, just finished the 3 throttle levers.
It's not easy and i'm not that skilled so i have to exclude some functions, for example: only one revers-lever is interfaced, so i cant revers engines individually.
I build as many as I can from scratch, and when i stumble across some real components for a good price I will add them in my project.

Hi Florian.
I'm sure I'll have to get an output card and SIOC very soon, but my audio selector works flawlessly. The switches have two poles. One side controls the green lights (switch on-> green light on) the other side is hooked up to an input card and are assigned in FSUIPC to operate the various audio selections.

:-)
Never change a running system - I wouldn't do it either.
For this code you only need an input card - it only addresses the respective FSIUPC offsets (for COM, NAV, ADF, Markers...).
There is no Output related since mine does not have any illuminating lamps when I switch things on.

Well, been a while since the last update. I've been busy with other projects lately, and by the look of things it's going to stay that way for a while. I hope to get back on track and steaming along with the sim after the summer. Anyways, my TQ and the glare shield arrived today. I had a good look at your pictures daveaust, from your TQ refurb. Amazing job. I can see I have a bit of work ahead of me. Mine looks very much like yours did in the early photos. Hopefully I'll be able to put some work into it over the spring and summer. I'll post a few photos of the new arrivals soon.

Tor, yes the 727TQ was a dirty job but it sure was addicting once I got started. I have one major tip. The easiest cleaner for 40+ years of grease/lint buildup is this $1 a bottle orange-oxy cleaner I get from what we call "dollar stores" around here. It works way better than 409, windex, etc. It sprays on and just melts the gunk. The best part is that is rinses right off with H2O and you end up with sparkly squeaky clean parts that are perfect. I gently scrape where the thick grease is then use it. The rinsing action is the best feature. I re-lubed things with white lithium grease(no moly) and it so far seems smooth as feathers. BTW the first time I tested the TQ, it was night and day even between my cool throttletek TQ. I was amazing how I "seemed" to have better skills just by using the real thing. Then again I guess that's why they use real TQ's on real planes?!? Just kidding... enjoy and hit me if you have any questions specific to the 727 unit since I lived inside mine for a month and a half daily! I look forward to you photos.

Thanks for the tip Dave. I have no idea if I can find that product over here though.
I do have a question with regards to disassembly though. How did you get all the levers out? I have the right side of the TQ disassembled (it actualy came that way) More to the point the side panel, flap an friction levers are disassembles as well as the gear and axle for the trim wheels. But I don't see how to go from there, you know how does the thrust levers and start levers come out?
Thanks for any pointers

They look very good. In fact we have a 707 cockpit in our university thats being converted to a 737NG. The radios look quite similar - i think though the panels in our one were black. and of course the rotating numbers on the display as it wasnt electronic but i think youd need a electronic engineering degree to do that.

Tor, you're almost there getting the thrust levers and start levers out. Mine were a bit tight so keep that in mind. Once the right side frame is off and Flap/Friction parts are out of the way (where you are), the thrust levers ride on that main shaft. It basically slides out from left to right. Use something like a wood piece and tap the the large hollow shaft from the left side (make sure you have the left nut off of the left side of course). There is a small square shaft in the notch of the larger hollow main shaft on the outside left. It keeps the hollow main shaft/axle from just spinning when the large locknut is tightened. That little guy is also is what makes the main shaft tight upon dis-assembly and reassembly. You had one on the right too and probably remember it. Of note I filed my small square shafts down a bit so the reentry/exit force was less. When the main shaft slides out you must keep walking the individual thrust/start levers off to prevent binding. ALso do not forget to mark each piece coming off including spacers- there are 2 different sizes and their position gets confusing when you reassemble. My diagram sucked and I ended up studying my pics to get it back together right. I used lithium grease for a cleaner long-term lube. You can also take out the start lever cams down below simply by pulling the shaft down below via screws on right/left access. Again mark these and do not do what I did: wash the marks off when cleaning. It causes more pain. Btw I added a new shaft and pulley to the lower right cage for the flaps cable. I used a nice composite wheel with bearings from the lower cable-out section that I wasnt going to use. The bullet-proof start switches should be good to go in yours too. I left out the internal plastic flaps switch lever to leave room for my linear flaps pot. Just remember you may have to really bang on the main shaft to get it out but once it's started just watch all the internals riding on that shaft and it should start walking out. Mine was very tight but I knew my force was in the right direction. Also- do not remove the inner partition between the two main shaft spaces, just leave it. It's fine where it is... dave

Thanks Dave! I did actually figure out how to disassemble the thrust levers before I was off for the hollydays last week. I've got the Trust levers out now, still need to pull the start levers out. The right side of the shaft was allready dis-assembled when I got the TQ. Infact I miss the large nut for the right side unfortunately. I guess I have to come up with some ingenuity to get the thing back together. Spare parts are definately not available from my local hard ware store!
I'll try to dis-assmble the rest of it today and start cleaning it. I'll try to take a few pics as well.
Thanks again for your tips and tricks Dave!

Tor, you are progressing really well!
If you have some time to spare, could you explain to me how exactly the reversers are interfaced with your system? I have seen a 707 TQ and the reverser is connected to the same "pulley-type wheel" as the throttle connected to which is connected to some gears and then a pot, however I was not able to see how the reverser and normal lever can move independantly of each other.
its rather difficult to explain, but I hope you understand what i mean!
AVIATor-Olav
05-21-2012, 11:39 AM
Hi. I know exactly what you mean, and the explanation is very simple. They don't move independantly. A portion of the pot travel is asigned for reversers in FSUIPC. :)
Quartermaster340
05-21-2012, 03:39 PM
but how do you build that into the throttle lever?, the main lever moves the "pulley wheel" which is connected by some means to the pot, but when you use the reverser handle, the same wheel moves the same pot... how are the levers made so that both levers can control the same pulley wheel?
AVIATor-Olav
05-21-2012, 04:41 PM
There's a linkage arm connected to the reverser lever which runs down inside the throttle lever. In the other end the linkage arm is connected to the pulley wheel out of centre. When the throttle is at idle and you pull the reverser up, the linkage arm pulls the pulley wheel with it beyond the idle position. I hope that was readable! :)

Just checking in to let you know I haven't perished or anything. :) Progress is still slow due to other commitments, but hey that's life I guess. Come August/September and that will all change!:) I have been able to do a few flights recently with a very limited set up to get some experience with my TQ and the radio stack. Everything works, but I do have some trouble calibrating the flap lever. It works fine the first few detents, but then when I hit flap 25 nothing happens, When I go to flap 30 I get 25 and so on. Nothing beats you guys going real. I would have done the same if the finance allowed such a move.
So my approach is quite opposite – how cheap is it possible to build with some kind of real look & feel.
It’s doable with a huge amount of hours and I may be finished before “game over”. ;)
Happy building – fun it is!!!

It sure is expensive all right. Having said that though I haven't really spent that much on this hobby. Compared to a few mates of mine that are into cars, snowmobiles, motorcycles etc. this is peanuts! Wouldn't even cover the expense of the tool box required to restore an old car! :) That's how I chose to look at it anyway!

I've been working on the steering mechanism lately. After a few tweaks it works about right. I haven't done any interfacing yet though.
Probably not the most elaborate piece of engineering, but it's simple and it works. No spring return on the ailerons yet, but the gas struts centers the elevator nicely.

Very very sweet! What material did you use for the ceiling to get you the flex? I'm just getting ready to do my ceiling panels now that I have both eyebrow window liners. I have been aligning them with the overhead. So far they fit in spite of the fact I've had to modify the side window and wall angles to fit my narrower outside box. It will be good enough for my inexact platform tho... Dave

The gauges will be inop. They'll be lit along with the light plates but that's it. I'll Interface the switches and the lights though. All switches will be assigned through FSUIPC and I'll have to write a SIOC script to light the lamps. The SIOC bit is new to me, and it will for sure take some thinking to get right! I decided the same with my DC-8. Ill fill the engineers station for display and use monitors behind the pilot's panels.
I have a lot of moving guages in the f-4 and 737-200 sims, and that is good enough for me.

The captain and FO instruments are on Samsung Syncmasters 21,3" with aspect ratio 4:3. I got these second hand off the net. The engine guages are on an old Samsung 19" in portrait mode. I've had this screen for ages. I found that 4:3 aspect ratio worked best behind my panels. These are hard to come by nowadays though, I have a second set of Syncmasters lying around incase the ones I use now should break down

Hi there,
Looking great, I am in New Zealand and I just recently met a guy who was selling his 727-212 (complete with all real parts) Simulator.
It was being decommissioned, so, he let me go through and take what I wanted, I got what I wanted and I now have complete panels, gauges, etc... from the real aircraft sitting in my shed waiting for a new home.
I am looking to sell on eBay but if there is any interest here I could work something out.
Let me know if you have any interest.
Cheers,
Kelvin

Hey Kelvin,
What do you have? How about posting them with pics in the MYC Classifieds section?

I'll get some pics up, I was just gouging interest to start with.
I have cdu Bay modules with weather radar, cdu's, engineer panels, many lights, whole bunch of switches, auto pilot modules, and a load of other bits and bobs.

Thanks for posting!
I'd be interested in cdu bay modules as I have no real stuff to put in it as of now. Infact I'd love to go for a full real MIP with steam gauges and the lot, but it's to much of an undertaking I feel. I don't have the funds for it at the time either. Please let me know what you want for the cdu modules though.
On a different note, this thread has been quiet for a while. The Sim is currently being converted to X-plane and the FJS 727. I'm designing and coding new instruments using Air Manager. This allows the instruments to be displayed on a client PC. This is a huge improvement to the sim as the work load is now distributed across a network of computers as opposed to the single PC set up I used to have. The fact that X-plane is a modern, supported platform is another huge improvement from FS9. Not to mention the graphics!
Here's a teaser:

I've also bought some Teensys and are currently working on coding various outputs. X-plane and teensyduino is going to let me do so much more than fs9 would ever do. Imagination and time is the only limitation.
More to come!
Cheers!

Hello,
Your sim looks really nice.
I am happy to sell everything that I have, see here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7EfRrfL0FV1QVFkOHh2b0liN2c
Let me know what you think is a far price and we'll go from there. I'll have to work out shipping, let me know where you are.
Feel free to email me at kelvin@mytechspace.co.nz
In the meantime I need to try and work out why I cannot post in the classifieds.
Cheers,

Hi Kelvin,
Thank you for posting these items. I am not sure what too say about a fare price, since B727 parts are not much of a collectors or builders top of the list litem(s). Best way would be to check ebay for comparable items and price accordingly. There are for sure a lot of these items I'd like to buy, but like anyone else I don't want to insult you by making a low offer. I will check some prices on items listed elsewhere and come up with an offer for you later...
Best Regards,
John

No problems, I'm happy to work with you on the cost, I'm sure that we could work something out.

Hey Kelvin,
I forgot to mention, once you get your Classifieds setup, will you please start a new post and repost your photos there? This is a thread for Norwegian 727-200 Project and I don't want us to hijack it, by going off topic somewhat...

Whatever you do, don’t buy anything from the gentleman above. I sent him money for some of the intems he advertised, but he never sent anything. I’ve tried to contact him several times through e-mail and IM. Nothing. It’s been well over a year since I heard from him now. Now you know.
Cheers!
