View Full Version : Random Pics Of My GA Build

I will have the updates of my build in this thread.
The faceplate is base on 172N that I yanked out from our local boneyard here in Cali. Painting this thing actually takes longer than building the whole flap unit =[.

Looking Great!!!
I managed to snag the actual flap lever and knob out of a 172 so I'll be adapting the two gears you sent me to that. My original design used a slide pot but the gears you sent me will allow me to use a rotary pot and that will work far better. Other than the original slide pot the control and position indicator that I am working on looks very similar.

The Garmin project is shaping up nicely as well! Looking forward to more progress and pics.

Whoa! very nice. How did you make the slider work in a horizontal position?
Folding the sheet metal in a U-shape is a bit of a challenge specially with very little space to work with. I had to make my own V-block and press break die so it doesn't harm the mounting ears. Thank god for FloJet, sim-building and tool making got easier.

I use Google Sketch-up for my drawings so some things are a pain to draw. But free is good so Sketch-up it is.
Not shown in the drawing, for that reason is a linkage between the top of the flap control arm and the slide pot. Because the pivot point sits so far below that it moves the slide reasonable well. However, I think the gears you sent me may work much better so I'll be trying that with a rotary pot.
As for the bends on the bracket, my efforts so far have all been done in a temporary bench jig. I have not yet figured that out how to get those two very close bends at the back of the bracket. I don't have ready access to a sheet metal brake so my sheet metal work is done in a rather primitive way using a combination of a bench vice, anvil, wood blocks, and a hammer. I get fairly good results, but I'm too much of a perfectionist so it's a real pain. I was contemplating moving to a two piece bracket if I could not manage the bends any other way.
Louie Mendez
11-15-2012, 02:26 PM
I have tried 2 piece brackets but it tends to sway the flap lever bracket as I shift the handle. I'm pretty sure there's a solution to that problem. One solid frame is far more stable like what you said it's a pain making things perfect =).
Update: I found a solution for the 2 piece brackets

Louie,
My flap control and position indicator is no where near as polished as yours, but I figure not bad for doing the sheet metal work with a hacksaw and the bends in a bench vise.
I got it assembled this evening for a test fit. I need to make a few of adjustments and add a return spring but it looks like it works as planned. I also checked it in my fuselage and it's a perfect fit. If you look close you'll see that the two gears and the face plate you sent me are in there.
72647265726672677268
Getting it rigid enough with a two piece bracket turned out to be no problem. I used 4 10-32 x 3/4 rod couplings to join the to plates and it is as rigid as a one piece bracket, maybe even more so. I'm hoping to test it on the pc tomorrow. My only concern is the gear ratio. The movement of the pot shaft is fairly small.

You seriously got the touch Tom! I like it again :D
I tested the gears and they are enough to make it happen. However if it doesn't work for you I have different gear sets in stock or I can custom cut (cdw, bitmap or dwg file is fine)them for you.

Louie,
Those look like they're just what I'll be looking for sometime soon.
I'm looking at one of two possible solutions right now for my main instruments. Either an LCD pico projector mounted in the fire wall to back project the instruments onto a rear projection surface of some sort, or a monitor if I can find one of such an odd dimension as to have a screen area 14 5/8 wide by 6 3/4 tall. Those dimensions cover outer edge to outer edge of the six pack plus VORs on a 172N's instrument panel. I might get away with slightly smaller because I have not deducted the bezel coverage from that.
Keep the pics coming! You do great work and there aren't enough GA guys out there providing this stuff.

I ate until it hurt, and then had dessert! Thanks for asking. I hope yours has been good as well.
Is it the square back plate that is 3.375x3.550 ? What about the outside diameter of the round bezel? The openings in a Cessna instrument panel cover are about 3.125" in diameter so I need to be sure the bezels would fit into that.

What is the inside diameter of the bezel ring?

At the moment the horn is a piezo horn that I am driving with a pulse modulated output off the Arduino.
The gears worked well. The range is a bit short but it's enough to get the separation between flap settings. I did what I thought was a final install today but after looking at it I will be reworking the position indicator and adjusting the opening in my MIP to get a better detent for the third falp position.

Louie, you are setting the bar very high in the GA building community!!! Your work is truly amazing. Guys, I have the joy of receiving today my very first items for my 172 build from Louie and I am ecstatic.
I puchased a lower panel set from Louie and the craftsmanship is outstanding. Louie has earned himself a customer and I know my build will be a good one with great parts from Louie.
As soon as I have time, I will post some pics of my build which is in very early, alpha stage.

Very well done.

P.S Just curious your'e electrical panel, is it made out of acrylic and is it backlit? Looks like the real thing. EDIT: I just found my backlight answer on your website, phenomenal.

Hey fellow AIP user =) and thank you! The first time I got my hands on that software I totally fell in love with it. I spend more time with that software more than my GF(she's laughing as I'm typing this).
The electrical panel is a combination of acrylic and 16 gauge sheet metal.
RojanTrojan

Yes totally agree, its very addictive. I cant get over how quick and professional the results are. Its very efficient and incredibly productive. Made a multimec push button switch render the other day (my first part and assembly -still have a long way to go) and that even impressed the wife, no easy feat I can tell you! Ha ha.
I wish I had discovered AIP for my previous project. The parametric modelling would have come in real handy. I used sketch-up for 3d visualisation and QCad for 2d drawings for output to the laser cutter previously, but to think what I could have achieved using Inventor.
Just wondered when you painted your panels did you do them by hand? In your photos they almost look powder coated? It has a fantastic finish. I assume the panels are white acrylic then painted then etched? I wanted a laser company here in the UK do this for me for backlighting but they were a little unsure what the result would be like. Seemed pretty logical to me, but it was the painting part they were worried about.
Cheers
Rhydian
Louie Mendez
03-07-2013, 11:47 PM
Yes the panel painting are done by hand. If you want that orange peel texture(powder coat appearance), allow 10-14 inches of spacing between your target area and the spray can when painting. On your first layer don't spray a blanket of paint, listen to Gangnam Style and give your hand the same rhythm as you paint the panel, make it freckled =) lmao. Let it dry for a few minutes and repeat the same step 3-5 times. You can then turn off that horrible song I have mentioned and your hand motion should look like you're doing Tai-Chi when you spray the last layer of paint.
Laser etching the paint shouldn't be a problem I do it all the time.

Following your thread here has kept me focused. I am battling a software bug with my radio displays at the moment and I'm hoping that my budget catches up in the interim so that when I have that worked out I can also start looking at the radio face plate again.

therefore the selection is momentary push in will alter the gps into nav,

Verrry nice. I wish the actual C172 I fly had rudder trim!
I see you included the 'record groove' in the wheels, are you going to use the original style trim indicator, or build a servo-powered indicator? There's something so beautifully simple and eloquent about the original design.
Hi Louie,
I dont have pics of my trim wheel, i used my cnc to cut the wheel and put the spiral groove in it. Then used Map pins
pressed and glued around the perimeter. Painted black it doesnt look to bad.
Are you going to drive the indicator as Surveyor780 said like the Real one. I did it that way and it works great
and quite simple to do.
Are you using a Pot or encoder for the trim. I used a pot so that its position is remembered when powering up
and flying. Sometimes ive wondered why i couldnt lift off. i had forgotton to set this wheel back to TO.

Les

Sometimes ive wondered why i couldnt lift off. i had forgotton to set this wheel back to TO.
I'm glad you made it back safely to the ground lol.
I'm going to try both methods and see which one works best. Using the original indicator takes about 4 full turns on the elev trim wheels and about 2 1/2 turn on the rudder trim to set the indicator to its full position. Of course that's starting from neutral.
Please correct if I'm wrong, this is based on 172RG center console that I have =).
Honestly, I'd rather utilized the empty slot on my OC USB Servo output which I think is much more feasible to obtain an accurate indication and cost to manufacture the assembly.
As for input, I will use a smooth turning encoder made by CTS and add a friction control to the trim wheel. If this doesn't satisfy me then I will use gears and pots.

I'm also doing a G1000 bezel for Hayward Flight using the same method. Soon as it's ready, you guys can come check it out in person if you 're local in the Bay Area.

Nicely done again Louie, getting very adept now, must be very rewarding. Was that done with your 3d printer. If so
will your production models be done on the same printer?.

This was actually laser cut and some of the contour features are manually chamfered. Production material will be made out of high tensile strength plastic and the buttons will be semi rigid plastic.

I'm glad to see this forum up and running again. I finally finished the gauge bezel project. With so many side projects going on it was tough to get these bezels completed in 3 months. It took me close to a year.
As for now I stopped doing custom projects for other builders, I need to finish up the GN430 and other stuff on my list.

It looks like I'm going to add a landing gear switch with the SP project. Should I call I call it 172SPRG ?
At first I was just going to use some plain ol' indicator lights on the panel but it didn't look appealing enough.
http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd462/northbaypic/DSCN5881.jpg (http://s1221.photobucket.com/user/northbaypic/media/DSCN5881.jpg.html)
By adding bezels around the indicator lights , the entire panel looks more authentic. As for now they do not have the shutter-dimmer and push to test features. I will be adding them later on.

Hi Louie, I noticed you were building a GN430 on another page. Just to let you know, that Mindstar Aviation have released their version ofGarmin GNS 430-530 with supports AIRAC navdata updates. I use their G1000 software suite.
Check it out here. http://www.mindstaraviation.com/
Your parts and cockpit look great.
I was thinking of getting a 3D printer to do some knobs for the G1000 etc, I noticed a video of you doing some on the 3D printer. How did they turn out ? and how long did they take ? I do also have a CNC machine, but thought the 3D printer would be better. What do you think ?

Wow thanks for sharing that. Too bad they didn't include the Garmin GTX on their software =(
Consumer level 3D printer is not all that great when it comes to fabricating parts with fine details such as the pattern around the g1000 knobs. They are only good for making quick parts but not recommended for production. I could be wrong but that's just my opinion.
Ever consider laser sintering?
You can also use a lathe to make knobs but it requires additional process to achieve the pattern like put it in a rotary attachment while laser etching the piece. I have done it numerous times =)
Are you building a 1040a ?

You can also use a lathe to make knobs but it requires additional process to achieve the pattern like put it in a rotary attachment while laser etching the piece. I have done it numerous times =)
Are you building a 1040a ?
yeah I wasn't looking at a production way, just for myself or a friend. I have a rotary attachment for my CNC so I will probably use that instead.
Regarding the 3Dprinting, I was thinking of using the laser alright, but using a Z axis and a diode laser instead, I know the resin is expensive, but I couldn't afford the Laser Sintering method to be honest.
Something like this.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/117421627/the-peachy-printer-the-first-100-3d-printer-and-sc
But I am probably going to make an order from VRinsight for the dual rotary encoders knobs for the dual ALPS encoders with a few friends, to cut down the shipping costs as they are cheap knobs, but the shipping cost is 40 euros :-(
Or just knuckle down into making them on the CNC machine.
As in regards the cockpit avionics I am in the process of designing, is the full G1000 systems for the Cessna Citation Mustang, and I mean everything from the fuses upwards while future proofing it for the real deal avionic package that will come to the market.

I think you could probably tighten or stretch the vinyl a little more on the underside of the glareshield. I think a few of those creases could be eliminated under the glareshield. Just my 2 cents! Overall looking excellent!

Thanks Al, I was able to stretch the vinyl using a heat gun. I'm going to have my buddy professionally re-upholstered the glareshield since I have to get my yokes covered anyway.

Hi Louie, it is alot for shipping, and thats for only 1, but I think 40 euros is the max no matter what you get from their website, either way, that's the only product that appeals to me that Vrinsight sell.
I am certainly in no rush to be honest. I have the autopilot completed in and tested in Diptrace along with other parts like the keypad. All the switch panels are done. G1k and MFD are designed in Corel Panel wise and the electronics in Driptrace, so I just need to CNC everything soon. I am doing more work for other people than I am for myself at the moment.
Which parts are you on about ?
So in other words, there is no rush at all. I just want all the dual encoder knobs, and if you have the time, the autopilot knobs of the mustang too. It will save me time drawing them up in CAD and then vectric to Mach3 etc etc, you know the way it goes.

Where have you been? Thought you got deployed to Afghanistan or something =)
The bezels are available I just haven't had the time to post them up, just email me when you're ready. The MIP I'll have it available in MDF, PVC or sheet metal, great for all budgets. You can also download the cut-out in my website if you want to make your own panel.

So far I have modeled the knobs for the fuel selector, O2 valve, air source select, TEST(upper right panel) and the Cabin Dump switch guard.
I'm going to redo the pinstripe on this from 0.063 to .030 inch.

Nice knobs and really well done, I also agree about the pin strip too, but ****, if I had them made for a one off job and they turned out like that, then I would be happy enough. Did you CNC those knobs ? Although I am not so new with CNC, I got a 4 axis rotary that I need to learn how to use with Mach3. Drawing up the knobs shouldn't be so hard IMO.
Thanks for the dimensions too ! I will take those into account.
Did you purchase the Mindstar GNS4350 530 yet ?

Hey Louie! No, still very much around, but have been pulling two FT jobs while the Mrs. finishes her degree, and a home remodeling project.... Unfortunately, been stalled on the pit.. BUT... things are easing a bit and I am beyond excited after seeing the bezels and the MIP.
In regards to the MIP... It 'looks' like you've allowed for a G1000 conversion based on the seams I'm seeing in your previuos pics. I assume this would be true regardless of MDF, PVC, or Sheet Metal?
I can only imagine how busy you are, but if you get some time, shoot me an email or PM with availability / cost info. Seeing your work has lit the fire again...
Thanks again for sharing!!!

Louie,
Having looked at those bezels and following your progress here I am back on the hunt for monitors that will fit inside my 172 instrument panel. I posted a message in another section of the forum but so far no feedback.
Here's the post: http://www.mycockpit.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27325
I'll be taking my cockpit to Flight Sim Con 2014 in June and it would be great if I could figure out monitors to fit the MIP by then.
As I type this it occurs to me that you might be able to drum up quite a bit of business as an exhibitor if you were to come to the conference. It's a long haul, so cost is a factor, but this years Flight Sim Con has a cockpit builders theme so the audience is a perfect match for your business.
Check it out here http://flightsimcon.com/ It would be a hoot to be able to meet you there.
It's been way to long since we had a good flight sim conference in the US. Last year a guy who has connections with a professional event management company and also belongs to one of the online virtual ATC groups put a conference event together. It was small, but as a launch event, very successful. They got enough interest that this year they were able to lock in a great location, The New England Air Museum" and in addition to the LAN party they are adding pit building into the conference.

Thanks! =)
I will purchase the 430/530 add-ons soon as my kid and I set up the computer for the 172 sim.
I can't wait for it to be completed as I'm building my own personal 208B/G1000 project.
To sum it up, I'm juggling with 172/182, 208 and Stang.
@ D
I will hit you up soon.
@ Tom
I'll reply to your thread with the dimensions of the monitors that may be suitable for your panel.
About the fscon, I'm interested on attending the event. I'll let you know if I get the green light to go.

Well, what ever you do, I am sure you`ll do a great job at it, given the skill and the machines you have at hand! This weekend, I am going to learn how to use my 4th axis on my CNC with Mach3 etc. I also got to learn Autodesk inventor. I looked at your website. You have some nice work on there !!

I forgot to mention also, if you are on the P3D or FSX platform, I would recommend you get the Mindstar G1000 for the avionics if your looking for a proper G1000 with VNAV etc (Depending on which autopilot you decide to use) (AFCS), as the GNS, it supports RealNavData and is fully functional. I've been using it for quite some time now and really like it, plus it didn't cost me a arm and a leg like other vendors out there.

For my son's172 we're using FSX and for the 208B I will be using Xplane. I like how PM's G1k can be link with FSX, P3D and Xplane. Now that you mentioned about the RealNavData, I'm thinking twice =/

I am using their G1K for about 3 years now or more. I did use the Project magenta GAGlass, but it isn't as good for aircraft variation. It does support Airac which is good of course, but the Nav Data which RealNavData have a sub for home users on http://www.realnavdata.com/ @ about 40$ for 4 updates a year, which in my case is well enough for home users. The Data is about 350mb in size per cycle compared to the other resources out there.
X-Plane, I do not use as my avionics package does not support it. So for the G1K from Mindstar, it's either FS9/FSX/P3Dv1.4, and if you have the other version of PD3V2 it also supports it. No X-Plane support at this time. Mindstar are well know for their commercial success in Redbird Simulators.
Either way, it's up to yourself in which path you want to take. I am on P3Dv2 with their G1K and RealNavData and I am loving it. Plus that company is going to offer a lot more in the next year..... Stay tuned with their facebook page in which you can find via google with a search of "Mindstar Aviation"
You should hit me up some time on Skype. We can talk about such things.
Best of luck

Louie, Regarding that other post and the monitors to fit behind the 172 MIP. I checked 2 or 3 other sources and came up empty. I also contacted two companies that custom cut monitors. I didn't think that was possible but they do it in a chamber pressurized with an inert gas and they cut existing monitors and reseal the edge.
Unfortunately I came up empty there as well. One company only does mil spec monitors designed to tolerate extreme shock, vibration, temperature, EMF pulses, etc. and as such their most inexpensive monitor cut to the sizes I need would be over $6,000. Needless to say that aint happening... The other company won't cut monitors unless I am willing to order a sizable quantity.
So, now I'm starting to toy with the idea of using one of those ultra compact projectors and back projecting the instrument display. This is turning out to be far more of a pain than I had ever imagined.
