Do I need a router

I want to connect 1 PC that has x plane to one arduino mega.
Everywhere they say you need router http://svglobe.com/arduino/ .
So do I really need a router,or can I just usev the LAN socket i my PC and plug it to Arduino Ethernet Sheild

You can connect using LAN
with CROSSOVR cable.

I done it But I have a problem to get the ARDref plugin working.

Try it and let me know,probably I messed up somthing in setings.
