Marc,
When I flew to Madeira last month, it was via oceanic airspace.
Why?
My thoughts are it must be cheaper than overflying France, Spain and
Portugal and paying their ATC charges. The extra time and fuel and oceanic
charges must be lower.
Could you plan a UA flight (EGKK-LPMA) and see which route is chooses. And
do you see costs?
Then send it via the Atlantic and see if the costs change?
Most airlines out of EGLL/EGKK overfly land, but the one I chose didn't and
I lie awake at night wondering why
My route was;
EGKK..SAM.UR8.DAWLY.UR8.GAPLI.UM197.GUNSO.UN486.OMOKO.T16.4500N/01600W.T16.4
000N/01600W.T16.NAVIX.T16.SNT..LPMA/0323
Which I put into my GPS and tracked all the way. The flight actually took
this route as I've got the saved track.
I didn't have the return flight plan, but it was basically inverted.
Aircraft was B737-800, airline was Excel Airways.
Looking forward to a good nights sleep.
