    Gear pictures

Here are the gears that I have made so far.

The white ones are the masters that I cut on my cnc machine.
The black ones are the ones that have been molded.
And you can see some of the gears still in the molds.

These gears are the ones that are used in the gauges as described in the Mike Powell book on making simulated aircraft instruments...I have got about 100 gears made at this time.

    Nice work Milt.

Would have like to have moulded mine too, but the convenience of ordering from ServoLink was just too easy.

Hi, interesting project, casting your gears.

What have you used to cast them with? I work quite a lot with Poly Urethane resin which is pretty hard but I would think it would be too soft or maybe even too brittle to use for gears. I understand that there is no heavy load on the gears but still, they'll get a lot of use.

    Re: Gear pictures

I am using oomoo 25 from smooth-on for the silicone molds and for the gears themselves, I am using smooth cast onyx. It is already colored black. I have tried to use pigments in the resin, but the demold time increases when I do. I also am concerned about the gears being strong enough. But, I figured that they are not spinning at high revolutions and most of them do not move much at all. Time will tell. But the cost is the reason I went this way, still no job prospects (18 months). This gives me time to do the molding. I also have been using it to do my instrument bezels, these came out really well.
