Hi,
shortly I`m starting to build my cockpit using a real fuselage a Cessna 172M,
I wonder if Asbestos is used in these airplanes
I`m thinking off the fireshield between the cockpit and the motor

If there is any asbestos in the cockpit, it will have to be removed and destroyed of in the way that the law states.

You will need to remove asbestos, not only for your health but for anyone else that comes in contact with it! It is the decent thing to do!

For goodness sake don't remove it yourself without face protection. Get a builder or someone trained to do so preferably. If you breate that stuff in it will kill you in a matter of days.

My real question is,
is there asbestos used in the plane or any plane for that matter?
If there is I wouldn`t touch it.
Where could I get this kind of info, I tried Cessna but still no reply.

Having been an owner of real US-built aircraft, the only asbestos that I am aware of, was "fire-sleeving", and that was changed to non-asbestos many years ago. Fire-sleeve is a tube of material that slides over various flexible hoses in the engine compartment to reduce damage to those hoses in the case of fire.

"Firewalls" in Cessna aircraft normally have no covering, and no asbestos, just metal - unless a previous owner has made their own mod.

that helps a lot, I was worried,
On the internet I have found a material list from Cessna
And it was mentioning something about neoprene coated asbestos with a documentnumber.

That neoprene coated asbestos sounds like the fire-sleeves to me. So, unless you also bought the engine with all of the hoses intact, I would think you're safe.
