Anyone tried the Bugeye idea ?

Hi everyone,

A couple of years ago there was a short hyp[e about the Bugeye, a 3 monitor setup with fresnel lenses to create a virtual image that was way larger than the lcd monitors.

However , last weekend I visited the Dutch Flightsim weekend at the Aviodrome and there where a few cockpit builders who where using 1 or more fresnel lenses.

I saw one setup with 3 14" lcd screens ( icm Matrox ) and this one had 1 large fresnel lense in front of it , which came out of an old Philips Projection tv.

Another builder had made a box with 1 17" lcd screen in it and a 22" fresnel lens in front of it.

When looking through their "window" it really gave a 3d feeling and the image was way larger than the screen

There also was a team with a real simulator which was using 2 collimated display systems.
One in front of the captain and one in front of the first officer.
Both had the same view.
This last concept can easely be copied by using the fresnel box idea.

I am thinking of making a Bugeye , but than larger.

Though I'm not sure about the details, but I believe Roland's setup was the 17" with a fresnel lens in front of it that you mention. If not, well he had the same setup though. I'm sure he'll chime in once he shakes the packing/unpacking of Lelystad off
