CWS (Control Wheel Steering)
Could someone explain to me what is CWS, control wheel steering. and how it relates to real world and simming.

I could be wrong but I believe CWS allows the pilot to change heading with the yoke whilst the A/P is holding ALT for instance. PMDG does not simulate this so it doesn't work in my sim. Maybe PMDG NGX will be better.

It does work in the DF727. The Sperry SP-50 is a dual axis AP. The elevator hold may be engaged independantly of the aileron hold. However, the aileron hold may not be engaged without the elevator hold already on.

CWS in a 737 holds pitch or attititude regardless of altitude or heading.
In other words it is used in turbulance when the pilot wants to hold say a 5 degree positive nose up attitude and wings level.
If he engaged the auto pilot it would be over correcting to try and maintain a heading or altitude or VS. This creates a very bumpy ride for the pax.
It is prefered when in turbulance that pitch and bank are hedl rather than position.
I asked a 737 training captain this exact question last thursday.
