737 Shell Plans
Greetings....
Well, it appears the bug of this hobby has bitten. And hard. I am spending money like it's water on parts and computers and software. I have flown numerous aircraft on FSX, and am thoroughly enjoying it. I am a Licenced Private Pilot and have been able to pick up the flying quite easily.
I have decided I want to build a 737 cockpit. I'm not going to do it all at once, and will start off with my existing saitek controls and add projectors/monitors and computers to run all these things as I progress, however I don't want to have to work backwards, so it seems obvious to me the first thing I need to do is build my cockpit shell.
What I cannot seem to find, anywhere, is a decent set of plans on building a 737 shell. I have looked everywhere. The thread on this forum in regards to building the 737 cockpit shell from plywood is fascinating, and really what I want to do, but the pictures don't offer me much in terms of plans (e.g.: measurments)
A couple of forums and threads have referred to a "famous line drawing" with all the measurements of a 737 cockpit. I have had no luck finding such a thing.
Can someone please help me out with either a full set of plans, or as a minimum, this "famous line drawing" with all the measurements?
Thanks in advance!

Re: 737 Shell Plans
Welcome to MyCockpit.org, Bucko911!
I believe, nobody here can come up with a perfect shell dimensions plan, because - AFAIK - it does not exist yet - except in the halls of Boeing, Inc.
I know, FlightdeckSolutions once had a wooden shell, which provided a good plan too, but they don´t produce that anymore. If you can find someone on these forums, who still has it, it would probably be the best thing. Ivar Hestness has build his shell according to those plans (AFAIK) but he once PMed me, he did not have the plans anymore on his PC Companies, who sell shells are unlikely to give their info away for good.
There are various line drawings for a start, but they give only the flightdeck dimensions, no outside angles etc. I fear, unless someone comes up with the real measurements, it´s all a "look at photos and compare" bizz. I had a terrible time figuring out how it all fits together.
There is some good line drawings on Ian´s home page: www.737ng.co.uk.
Cheers
Chris

Re: 737 Shell Plans
You can get a pretty good idea from all the plans and drawings on this site.

Good luck with yours!!!

Re: 737 Shell Plans
If you look at the Opencockpits site, the drawing you are referring to is there. I have done a lot of searching for drawings. This particular drawing shows up in a number of different forms here and there but the opencockpits drawing is a CAD version. This drawing appears to be based on a CAD drawing put out by Boeing which is provided to airports to help in parking, etc.
I have compared many drawings and measurements and risked driving myself quite crazy. The Opencockpits drawing seems about as accurate as you will find. I have even turned screen shots from FSX, turned them into line drawings and scaled them. They were quite close. I too am attempting to build an Ivar Hestnes type cockpit. I have been using a CAD type program to draw measure the arcs that make it a curved shape. I'd be happy to share info if you are interested. It's a little long to explain.
If you can't find the drawing PM me and I will send you what I have.

Re: 737 Shell Plans
If you check out Ivar's new website he explains the process in detail. He basically scaled a picture of the FDS wooden shell. Very ingenious the way he went did it. Good luck.

Re: 737 Shell Plans
Here is a hint!
Once you find the plans, build a small scale mock up version first. You can use balsa wood (the type to build RC airplanes), ice cream sticks (purchase from a hobby store), and cardboard to make a small model. Use metric measurements throughout; it is easier to scale with metric.
Also, use poster board to make skin covering for your model, but remember this material will flex different then wood. So, when measuring, make sure you remember this. And for wood, if you can and you have access to a large unit, try using steam to soften your wood first, and thereby making it easier to shape...
Finally, continue to ask for help here at MYC, there is lifetime of information concerning the B737; especially, since it is the most popular built simulator.
